CornerPost Software Releases Surrogate Socket 5.0
“…with the use of a SOCKS client, you can make virtually any program utilize the versatility of SOCKS V5.” -Paul Elswick

Duffield, VA - May 28, 2002 - CornerPost Software announced the release of Surrogate Socket 5.0 today. Surrogate Socket 5.0, also known as SS5, provides SOCKS V5 support for Microsoft Internet Security & Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000. SOCKS is a protocol for handling TCP traffic through a proxy server. It can be used with almost any TCP application, including Web browsers and FTP clients.

Paul Elswick, President and Chairman of CornerPost Software was on hand to answer questions during the announcement. When asked why CornerPost would want to provide SOCKS V5 support for ISA Server when Microsoft had already built SOCKS V4 into ISA, Mr. Elswick responded by saying “SOCKS V4 is very limited compared to SOCKS V5. It does not provide a mechanism of authenticating clients, and perhaps more importantly, it is not capable of relaying UDP – something that our customers have told us is very important to them.” Mr. Elswick went on to say that implementing SS5 with ISA Server would allow for client configurations that were not possible before with ISA. “Before SS5, if ISA owners wished to require user’s to authenticate in any way with their username before accessing the Internet, and also wanted users to be able to use other protocols besides HTTP and HTTPS, then they had no other choice but to install the Microsoft Firewall Client. The larger an organization is, the more tedious of a process that this becomes. SS5 allows administrators to connect their SOCKS capable applications to the Internet without using the firewall client. In addition, with the use of a SOCKS client, you can make virtually any program utilize the power of SOCKS V5.”

It is because of the versatility of SOCKS V5, and it’s potential for making network administrators’ lives easier that CornerPost expects SS5 to find fast popularity. Thus far, CornerPost sources say that many software programs have been tested with SS5 including: Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, AOL Messenger, Audiogalaxy, CuteFTP, Kazaa, E-donkey, SmartFTP, WinMX, mIRC, and Morpheus.

Officials went on to say that this list is in no way a complete list. The beauty of SOCKS V5, they said, is “versatility, versatility, versatility.”

There is no doubt that the Internet has made our world smarter, more connected, more productive. Experience has also proven how dangerous the Internet can be when it is used “unchecked” by good judgment.
